More Women Are Landing Construction Jobs. Trump’s War on DEI Could Change That. - Elsacat - May 14 2025 https://msmagazine.com/2025/05/14/women-construction-jobs-trump-dei-diversity-equity-inclusion/ Quote:In May, the Trump administration canceled a major grant for groups helping women get jobs in trades, along with several other grants that supported programs seeking to prevent sexual harassment. RE: More Women Are Landing Construction Jobs. Trump’s War on DEI Could Change That. - YesYourNigel - May 14 2025 I love construction and I really wish more women got into it. But the amount of misogyny along with self-destructive dick-measuring in the industry makes it unbearable. My fave is when people whine about not enough people in construction while doing everything they can to keep half of the population out of it. Can't wait for Trump to start blaming it on women not popping enough babies out. RE: More Women Are Landing Construction Jobs. Thiissss. Apart from the obvious issues like taking grants away, this is just such a common thing I've noticed in male dominated industries. The two main male dominated areas I've worked in was as a cook at a restaurant throughout college to pay rent and now in software engineering. In both instances, men would talk shit about how women could easily be there but most of us are just clearly not interested in doing that kind of work (throw in some good ole biological essentialism here too). And there's nothing keeping us from doing it. Meanwhile, these guys would sexually harass me, exclude me, force me into doing the shittiest jobs, get in my way to prevent me from moving up, just all kinds of shit. There were few days I went into work as a cook when one of them wouldn't comment on my ass, say creepy shit around me about the female servers, show nasty shit to each other on their phones out in the open (like borderline porn, for instance), actively not help me with shit they were supposed to and laugh at me while I struggled. At my last software job, I was placed to do a huge project by myself, as a software engineering apprentice, no tech lead, no senior, no scrum master, literally nothing. None of the guys had to deal with that, they were placed on normal teams with normal set ups. We were supposed to get new laptops and they gave all the men new ones and all the women were turned down for some sorry reason that didn't make sense but it was clear they just didn't want to give us the good stuff. There was one senior I was supposed to go to ask questions to and he would ignore my questions and spend our zoom meetings lamenting about his dating life, saying weird offhand comments to me that I just could not figure out if it was like bad enough to report to HR as harassment and then he started sending me these really weird animes that creeped me the hell out, like food wars (Google with caution). Even at my current job, its way better than the previous one but there's still such obvious misogyny. All the females devs get talked over and ignored, no matter how senior they are. I've had multiple accounts of a male dev reviewing my PR and giving me some vague ass, useless, and often insulting "feedback". Like one where he just commented "I think we could do better here". That's it. That was the whole review. Never seen him or any of the rest of them not give specific feedback on code. How the hell is someone supposed to work with that? And this is just a small account of the misogyny I've dealt with in these jobs. I'm not leaving, they can't force me out, but holy shit, its hard to blame women that do leave or dont want to deal with it when THIS is how male coworkers treat us. And then seriously have the audacity to claim that its because women aren't "logical" or "don't like to sweat". Nah dude, what we don't like is being degraded, harassed, left behind, etc etc constantly in these fields. Fuck these people. Anyway, thanks for reading this rant if you got this far. |
