Quote:“They said, ‘Crime’s down 87 percent.’ I said, no, no, no — it’s more than 87 percent, virtually nothing. And much lesser things, things that take place in the home they call crime. You know, they’ll do anything they can to find something. If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say this was a crime. See? So now I can’t claim 100 percent but we are. We are a safe city,” Trump said.

A little fight with the wife has never been a crime. The cops don't get called because someone forgot to put the cap back on the toothpaste. I don't know what he could be referring to other than domestic violence, "a little fight with the wife" that's bad enough to bring police attention.

It's framed as a Trump thing but this aligns perfectly with standard patriarchal thinking. Women are used as buffers for all sorts of male misbehaviour and violence, and wives being expected to soak up their husband's abuse while the severity gets downplayed is but one example of this.

He knows he can get away with saying it, especially considering the environment he said it in.

One doesn't typically call the cops in unless they think they're about to die. Infer from this fact what you will about the goal of the president's statement.
