Overlooked No More: Maria W. Stewart, Trailblazing Voice for Black Women - Elsacat - Mar 1 2025 https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/obituaries/maria-w-stewart-overlooked.html https://archive.ph/lY1GE Quote:Stewart was a 28-year-old former indentured servant. In her manuscript, a political manifesto, she recounted her upbringing and described the conditions for Black women in an oppressive America. She also argued for equal opportunity for Black Americans, and she did something no Black woman had done before: speak directly and publicly to other women, urging them to educate themselves, “to promote and patronize each other” and, even more, “to sue for your rights and privileges.” RE: Overlooked No More: Maria W. I, too, look at such people and stories for inspiration. I love how intelligent and brave she was, truly a great example. RE: Overlooked No More: Maria W. It seems so obvious to me that feminism has existed since the beginning of time in the hearts of girls who know injustice when they see it. I’m not surprised at all to hear this woman existed because I have imagined many women like her in all the times and places humans have ever lived. I can’t read the article because I cancelled my subscription, but I do hope stories like these help women understand that feminism doesn’t belong to any particular group of women. It belongs to all of us, and always has. RE: Overlooked No More: Maria W.
