Take Action! Teaching English to Afghan women and girls
So for anyone still following/still interested, the mentorship meetings curriculum is as follows:
Exploring Coursera to find courses/programmes that will help achieve educational/career goals
Applying to and attending Coursera classes
Applying for financial aid for Coursera classes
Exploring career opportunities
Writing CVs and LinkedIn profiles
Job hunting, applying for work or scholarships, interviewing
Professional behaviour on the job
Financial life skills
I can definitely help with most of these.
Further update - had my first meeting with the girls yesterday. Quiet, but dedicated and ambitious. We didn't talk much about their lives, or personal things, but I asked them what they wanted to do in the future. Two CS, one teacher, one entrepreneur (wants her own brand, and to run a restaurant), one wants 'a library in New York City', and one wants to be president! I mean, why not - someone has to do it, why not her? Internet connections are really poor, and most are on their phones, with no headset - so I struggled to see and hear them. I'll have to see if I managed to get used to that.
It's taken ages because of my having to recover from the surgery, but I'll be having my first meeting with someone from the organization this week to see if I'll be a good fit! :D Hopefully I'll have good news to report soon.
Just got off the call a little while ago! They asked me if I'd be interested in being a mentor due to my background in tech. Happy to help however I can, so I said yep! Seems like the semester runs from January to May, so I probably won't be asked to do anything full-time for a few months, but I'm looking forward to it 😊
Excellent! They did the same with me - they don't actually have any girls yet interested in my profession, but in the meantime I'm working with high schoolers. The 'semester' thing doesn't seem to be real - I just started right in, and we're working through the programme at our own pace. Yesterday was resume/CV day - I was honestly shocked by how good their first efforts were.
