Rural health care, especially for pregnant women and babies, has already been taking a hit because of state abortion laws that are pushing doctors out and closing clinics and hospitals. Medicaid cuts are going to gut what's left. American women may as well start learning the old ways of midwifing, because that might be what it comes down to for many of them.

I don't know how all this squares with these same powerful people's expressed desire to increase American birth rates.

I live in an area where a pregnant woman might have to drive a couple hours to get to the nearest hospital with a delivery room. If/when the hospitals marked on the study this study looked at shut down, it's going to be awful for women in some of our communities. And if they do turn to midwives and home deliveries - which is on the rise anyway because this is a very tradwife area - it'll be just as long of a drive to reach emergency medical services if there are complications. Women are going to die because of this, and the babies they're carrying, too.
