Quote:Women trapped under debris are sometimes left behind while the dead are pulled out, further underscoring how gender rules, not just rubble, are obstructing rescue efforts in a country ruled by the Taliban for the past four years.

Quote:Centuries-old customs and Taliban-imposed gender restrictions are compounding the tragedy for Afghan women following the recent deadly earthquake, which killed at least 2,200 people and reduced scores of buildings to rubble. Women have often been the last to be rescued, or not rescued at all, due to ā€˜no skin contact with unrelated males’ rule that forbids male rescues from touching them.

Strict cultural and religious norms, enforced by the Taliban government in Afghanistan, permit only a woman’s close male relative, her father, brother, husband or son, to touch her and similarly, women are prohibited from touching men outside their family.

Some comments:

optimistic9pessimist As a white western medic traveling in an islamic state, I was warned NOT to administer first aid to any Muslim girl/woman even in an emergency situation. Was told I need the husband/father/brother's permission to touch a female Muslim, which they would not give, letting them die rather than me providing help..Ā

Now I'm an accepting kinda guy and tolerant of most things, but this blew my mind. Thankfully I was not tested in this way, but it would be very difficult to just let somebody die when I could have made efforts to save their life. It's mind boggling..

EmmaPersephone Yet they won’t let women get educated in medicine..

Impressive_Let3557 In Pakistan they let women become doctors but wont allow them to practice - they are called "doctor brides"

Quote:Therefore, the medical degree is considered a "hot ticket" for women and parents to get a better marriage proposal; they become "trophy wives." ... it is purely a social status kind of thing, where people proudly introduce their daughter-in-law as a doctor. But in the end, they need the same doctor to make food for them and take care of the home’s choresĀ

They should be sent all female rescue teams, nurses, doctors. Withdraw all foreign aid by male teams. They can be helped by women, or not at all.

I'll repeat the comment I made on Vexxed: This is what it looks like when "no men allowed in women's spaces" is taken to a ridiculous extreme. No common sense need apply.

and to add: Why do men lack nuance in these things? Either they identify as women and want the right to invade women's spaces, or they want to control and restrict access. What women want barely figures into it.

(the answers, of course, are "patriarchy" and "male violence")

Just noticing that it is media like the telegraph, the nyt and Hindutva sources like India Today providing most of the coverage on this issue whereas the same exact sources either minimize, deny or ignore what’s going on with women in Gaza.

There is a strong tendency going back decades to amplify horror stories among Muslim women as long as it is their men doing it. And as we have seen in Afghanistan. Invading them has not not been a solution. Furthermore, there’s no appetite to evacuate them via asylum to the west as frankly Western feminists are more concerned about their niqabs.
