Aha! That explains why certain sections of my social media are seething with bile today against the great villain of the age, 🙄, Joanne Rowling. And why others are typing in obvious bewilderment to declare that they are good people, and they agree that women are female, why are their progressive friends attacking them? It’s not like they are monsters or anything, they are good allies, but, like, there are two sexes, right? Everyone knows there are two sexes…

Excellent news. Well done, TERFs of TERF island!
(though part of me wonders if the court might next rule that water is wet and the earth revolves around the sun)

It’s truly amazing news.

It’s also great for all of us worldwide because now ce can point to the UK and say « see what the UK did ?! That’s how it should be » and not sound completely demonic to the general population.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. The activism of the British GC movement, the grassroots organising of A Woman’s Place UK,  Sex Matters, and, crucially in this decision, For Women Scotland was exemplary. The calm insistence on women’s rights, the detailed legal and academic arguments, the refusal to demonise their opponents, the defence of same-sex attraction and unconventional presentation, the courteous and implacable engagement with politicians, governments, committees, ngos, trans organisations, the brilliant and brave lawyers who articulated the obvious impact on girls and women of erasing sex.

This is how it’s done.

Quote:The Supreme Court rejected the idea that the categories of “men” and “women” refer to the possession of government-issued documents rather than the immutable biological categories of male and female.

The judges accepted that sex discrimination against women, or against men, is discrimination against members of an objectively defined, materially distinct group, not a group defined by possession of government-issued pieces of paper.

Awesome, congratulations to UK women! I hope this can somehow lay out a path to justice for women in other countries.

the law used to be the whim of the king. the magna carta made law common

gender ideology changed law to the whim of any man

law had to stop being stupid

this is a good start, medicine next. puberty is not pathology

It boggles my mind that trans people will say "forced puberty" or "coercively assigned gender" or even call the fact that they're male or female a "disorder" or "condition", as if this completely natural and neccessary aspect of human biology is somehow imposed onto them by an oppressor force.

Perhaps this logic is profitting off of abortion rights (hence shit like "forced puberty", like "forced birthers")? Pregnancy is a normal thing as well, and yet we expect the ability to intervene and stop it, as well as to receive medical assistance with it to be a part of basic medical rights for us. I think the key difference though is that abortion does not negatively impact your health in any way (while pregnancy in fact can, severely so, hence also the need for assistance in birthing), whereas messing with a child's puberty does. Furthermore, puberty genuinely is something we all must endure, even if we hate it or find it traumatic (which is a very common, even normal experience) because that is a key and necessary aspect of our human biology, whereas pregnancy is an additional choice that a woman should also have to be able to opt out of.
I guess that goes back to the first point that there is no loss in abortion since pregnancy is an "extra", and ending it puts the woman back into the default healthy state. Interfering with puberty using drugs to eventually create and maintain a hormonal imbalance in a completely healthy body that is fully capable of naturally producing the required amounts of the hormones it needs to thrive is an intervention that turns a healthy person into a lifelong patient reliant on constant drug intake that produces atrophy of their organs and destroys their healthy endocrine system.

I'm actually surprised we haven't gotten a movement for children to take puberty blockers indefinitely as a medical necessity against the mental trauma of puberty. I wonder if that is going to be the next step? Or did trans really need the bioessentialist backing of gender roles to push their idea that girlbrains really can exist in male bodies? Whereas needing to grow up is pretty universally accepted as a necessity (though at the same time, we also relate en masse to the desire to stay children forever and not have to deal with adult responsibilities).

I refuse to debate two obvious facts: 1. the patriarchy exists 2. and that's a bad thing
