I wonder if they realised what a bad idea it is to limit the household to just one income. Poor men get less money to control that way. I can't imagine them giving a shit about their wives and daughters, let alone women in general.

Damn, got paywalled on my PC - anyone got an archive link?

EDIT: I am a silly person and realized I could just find one myself. Here it is!

EDIT #2: OK, I'm back now that I've read it. Honestly, I'm very glad to see that they're facing internal strife, and I hope something actually happens from this.

I'll preface this by saying that I hate all organized religion, including and particularly Islam, and I certainly don't believe that these dudes actually care about women's rights, lmao. However, I could believe that some of them are actually upset about this for totally different reasons. I think historically, in the Muslim world - and I'm talking like a LONG time ago - it was encouraged for women to be educated, and it even says to do so in their silly little book, at least depending on your interpretation. So I could believe that some of these dudes think they're going against their religion by preventing women from going to school. 🤷 Not to mention all the other downsides (e.g. economic) of half your population not knowing how to read and not being allowed to go outside...

Thanks for the archive link, I was too lazy to make/find one so u are an angel lol. 🙏:meowqueen:

Quote:Going further, at a graduation ceremony last month in southeastern Khost province, near the Afghan-Pakistan border, Stanikzai said: “We are being unjust to 20 million people. There is no justification for this – not now or in the future. During the time of the Prophet Mohammed, the doors of knowledge were open for both men and women.

“There were such remarkable women that if I were to elaborate on their contributions, it would take considerable time.”

Shortly after Stanikzai’s speech, Akhundhzada ordered his arrest to silence dissent within the leadership. Stanikzai escaped to the UAE before the authorities could arrest him.
Wow. At least he tried...

I am hopeful. It is good to know there is disagreement and resistance within the Taliban's own ranks to... some of the extreme overt misogyny going on over there.

Any amount of hope is good at this point. Anything that helps those women's and girl's lives be even slightly better...

Reminder for anyone who wants to help Afghani women and girls that drdee shared a way to get involved and help women and girls in Afghanistan learn English!
