Quote:Abortion is murder – the emotive rallying cry popular with pro-life campaigners keen to convert others to their cause. But what if opposition to abortion isn’t all about sanctity-of-life concerns, and instead at least partly about discouraging casual sex?

That’s what psychology researchers found in experiments designed to test what really drives anti-abortion attitudes in the USA. The study, published today in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, challenges how most pro-life individuals justify their views on abortion.

I think they admit this all the time, usually indirectly. Some outright say that they don’t want women to have sex outside of marriage when they’re talking about abortion. Some say they’re pro-life, but then they get an abortion themselves and claim it’s different for them because they were married with kids and couldn't handle any more, or they were married but in a financial crisis, or whatever the reason is. In other words, they're a good woman who follows the rules, unlike those other women who shouldn’t be able to get away with their indecent behavior unpunished. And there are a lot of pro-life people who think there should be exceptions for rape and incest. It’s a less extreme stance, but it reveals that they don’t entirely believe that abortion is murder. They make exceptions for women and girls who are victims because they didn't do anything wrong, and so they don't deserve punishment. The women who chose to have sex are not victims and need to be taught a lesson. I still think they somewhat believe that abortion is murder, but they use emotional reasoning, and it's a lot to do with punishing women for having sex.

I'm not even sure it's always so indirect. Haven't we all heard "She should keep her legs closed if she doesn't want to suffer the consequences"

"Abortion gives women agency over their own bodies and lives" doesn't have quite the same ring as "abortion is murder." Guess that's why they settled on the latter.

Yeah, but I don't think people who are against abortion are always pro-life. I was referring to people who are anti-abortion and seem to believe that abortion is murder, like they're caring people who want to save babies.
