Quote:A group of women on South Korea's largest island, Jeju, follow a unique tradition to put food on the table: They freedive to depths of nearly 33 feet (10 meters) without using any special equipment.

Now, a new study reveals that these women carry distinct genes not found in South Koreans living on the mainland. These genes may be linked to the women's abilities to withstand frigid water and lower their blood pressure while diving, the scientists wrote in a study published Friday (May 2) in the journal Cell Reports.

Jeju Haenyeo — which translates to "women of the sea" — begin diving for seafood at around the age of 15, gathering abalone, sea urchins and octopuses. According to UNESCO, members of the group harvest for up to seven hours a day for about 90 days of the year. They continue the practice well into their 80s, not even taking a break when pregnant.

On Thursday night in London, members of a top British magic society came together to right a three-decade-old blunder: The rejection of what they now consider one of the greatest deception acts their members ever fell for.

“It was an amazing ruse — fooling a room full of magicians,” said Maddie Spencer, 48, who is in the group, known as the Magic Circle.
In March 1991, when the club was restricted to men, a woman named Sophie Lloyd disguised herself as a man and earned full membership. (Her alias: “Raymond Lloyd.”) But when she and her accomplice revealed their ruse later that year — at the same time as the Circle started accepting women — the society promptly ousted her.

Malinda Russell wrote A Domestic Cookbook: Containing a Careful Selection of Useful Receipts for the Kitchen in 1866. We know sadly little about her, says Rafia Zafar, a retired professor at Washington University in St Louis, Mo., who contributed a foreword to the new edition.

"She's widowed early. She has a handicapped child. She starts her own business. She has a pastry shop," Zafar says.

Russell's shop may explain why you can find at least a hundred recipes for sweets in A Domestic Cookbook. The desserts are old-fashioned: allspice cake, French lady cake, lemon puffs, boiled berry pudding. But they still sound delicious. Her cookbook also includes a number of savory recipes, recipes for shampoo and cologne – and remedies for toothaches, corns, even dropsy (an archaic term for swelling and edema.)
