Eight-month-old female baby gets her ears stabbed in the name of beauty culture. Welcome to the world, baby girl.

Internal_Teach_7032 I (29F) left my 8-month-old daughter with my MIL (56F) for an afternoon so I could run errands. When I came back, my baby had pierced ears. I nearly fainted.

My MIL said, “It’s a cultural thing, she looks so much prettier now,” like she did me a favor. I was livid, we never discussed this, and I never would’ve consented. My baby cried for hours that night from the pain.

My husband (30M) is furious too, but his mom keeps doubling down saying, “it’s my granddaughter, I get a say.”

I honestly don’t know if I can ever trust her alone with my baby again.

I don't know why anyone pierces a baby's ears. Why put a young child through that? If they're not old enough to ask for piercings and understand that there's initial pain and some maintenance involved, they're not old enough to make the decision. And they should never have pierced ears if it isn't their idea.

Seriously... I don't understand how it's not illegal for piercing places to do piercings on babies/young children, and not considered child abuse for anyone to do it...

Unfortunately it's traditional in some countries. Happened to me. Stopped using earrings pretty early in childhood and the holes never healed right.

Even as babies, we're just objects to display.

This. We are little dolls to dress up, put earrings on (that we can cover in baby spit-up). Some cultures practice FGM. Some ear piercing. I don’t think any still bind feet (dear goddess I hope not).

What makes this creepier is that grandma knew the mother didn't want to do it--- but purposely went behind her back. She is not only a snake, but has some obsession with the topic. Like I had my ear pierced as a baby, but it wasn't this urgent thing.

I got my ears pierced as a kid- voluntarily. Begged my family after we passed one of those kiosks at a mall. Girl doing it couldn't have been older than 16 lol. Happy I didn't catch some disease after reading about how they cannot even properly sanitize the kind of piercing gun those places use.

It only takes seconds, yes, but I bet it would be upsetting and confusing to randomly experience pain in your ears as a baby.

I got mine pierced at an outlet mall when I was in elementary school. My parents noticed this strange small pop-up store, set up with very little, I recall. There was a senior couple there, with some folding chairs and a folding table. They were doing... ear piercings? All I remember they had was a paper chart showing the earrings available, a basic set of "birth month" gemstone stud earrings. My mother asked me "would you like to get your ears pierced?" I was a very... neutral child... for the most part. I looked back and forth between her and the bizarre pop-up ear piercing shop and like Bobby Hill, I said "...okay." I guess it sounded "nice", that I would have "pretty earrings," like my mom.

After the first stab with the nail gun, I was jolted into a silent shock. I guess I didn't realize it would hurt. I think I trembled in place as they did the second one, but I was basically frozen with my eyes wide open, not muttering a peep.

My parents joked about how I spent the rest of the trip at the mall being wide-eyed not moving my head at all. Due to the pain.

Weird ass shit. Honestly whenever I think back to that event, I'm more interested in why the hell was this senior couple so invested in piercing ears that they rented a whole little shop thing at the mall for this temporary business thing. Next time we went there they were gone. Wtf. Idk if I'll ever know.

Well anyway, while I still think it's bizarre that society encourages girls to get their ears pierced at such young ages, I'm... "glad" that you at least adamantly wanted your ears pierced lol. Also yeah the fact that we trust part-time teenagers with earring guns and low sanitization standards to do it is... what a society, lol.
