I’m sorry to all the women who have felt pressured to see a male gynecologist against their wishes. I think women’s autonomy isn’t taken seriously in general, but specifically when it comes to medical decisions like this our needs are never respected. I avoided treatment for debilitating period cramps and other symptoms for years until I was an adult because my family didn’t respect the fact I didn’t want to see a male. It’s such a simple request that’s made specifically so the patient can have physical exams and talk to our doctors without unnecessary discomfort but it’s never respected. Even my liberal friend at one point said my refusal to see a male gynecologist was stupid.

In my mind, the core of this is that women are not the class of people to express preferences or boundaries against men, this is just one example in my view.

I think they might also be more militant in this because when women are free to express their feelings and preferences and set boundaries for their own reasons, not necessarily being ''rational'' even, this also means that women's concerns against biological males in their spaces are inherently valid and something to take seriously. (not that it's irrational, but I'm trying to describe the perspective of women not having to justify, argue, defend and explain everything, but that preferences, dislikes, and so on are valid on their own)

I also see this attitude with male teachers and male caretakers of (small) children. Any concern is dismissed as misandry and sexism, hysteria, shameful. Basically any kind of consequence formen's poor treatment of women and vulnerable people such as kids, even when it's just being guarded or slightly more distrustful, is an affront and an attack. They don't want to see any consequence of their behaviour whatsoever, they want endless and unconditional positive regard.

I think it comes down to people feeling like women's boundaries are unnatural, aggressive, against the order of the universe.

I've had people poopoo my requirement to have only female gynos before, but it definitely happened a lot more when I lived in a more conservative area than I currently do.

I feel more trepadation about requiring that now, oddly enough, because I live in a liberal area that's way too trans happy.

I still require it. I haven't had anyone try to *gotcha* me with a TIM medical provider, thankfully. But if they did, I would walk out immediately.

I hate that this is a thing I even have to consider, but I wouldn't put it past some man to want to "test" a woman in a vulnerable setting like medicine.

Anyways. 🙃

I choose only female practitioners, period.

perimenopausal and cranky as hell. also laughs at the drop of a hat. it's an exciting life, what can I say?
