(I wasn't sure where the best place for discussions on porn/porn bans would be, so chose this subforum)

A porn ban should be something I feel happy about, but I do not trust the current administration, nor the Republicans, to not overreach badly on this. A federal porn ban could be used as a gateway to ban things that are not porn, such as discussions or illustrations about biological functions or reproductive health, media that has some explicitness to it but is not intended as porn, feminist and pro-women talk that discusses sexual violence or sexual activity. I think it could also be used as a gateway to force more "modesty" on women under the guise of not violating obscenity or porn laws.

Be careful what you wish for. You may get it, and from those who have no intention of providing it fairly and responsibly.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about this. Something needs to be done about the porn problem, but I dont trust the GOP to limit it to just actual porn. I also have serious doubts that it would pass either way considering I can't imagine the government passing anything that would ultimately upset sooooo many white men. Republican men (obviously as well as liberal men) love porn, we've seen the statistics. They can pretend they're all Evangelicals that think porn is filth but the numbers dont lie.

If they did this properly and didn't use it to ban all sorts of material that isn't porn (which they wont), they would only get support primarily from women. And none of these people give a shit about our needs or worries. I just can't imagine that actually happening, unfortunately.

I agree. If it's going to be done well, men will absolutely not support this. They'll claim it's bad, but even if they don't regularly consume it they like knowing that they have access to nude women and women being degraded sexually if they want it. They love to keep that door open. Same with prostitution. Even men who aren't active johns like the reassurance that if life gets really bad, they always have the option to financially coerce a woman into sex.

I do not support a universal porn ban as every effort to do so has only created interest in seeing porn. Plus the standard on obscenity itself cannot be as a justice once said, “I know it when I see it.”

I support age limits, however. I think porn streaming sites should be legally required to digitally card the audience. Bonus if they feel they have to charge as a result as not only do you cut down on child but also adult viewership.

This would do a lot more than a universal bam.

Agree with all this. And the comments above stating they don't trust Republicans to enforce a porn ban without it creeping into weird puritanical shit.

There shouldn't be an outright porn ban, instead there should be age verification laws for all online pornographic content distributors (similar to how one would have needed an 18+ ID to rent pornographic films at a video rental store), and I think all pornographic content needs to somehow be "catalogued" so that the "actresses/actors" in the film are verified to be of legal age and "consent" to being in the footage. I think this would cut down a lot on "revenge porn" and potentially on women who have been trafficked to make pornographic footage. Essentially going with a "harm reduction" approach here. Porn should be abolished tho, I just know that Republicans trying to do it is suspicious and bound to be a trojan horse.

+1 on both of these points... very strongly opposed to anything limiting free speech laws unless the speech causes an immediate, direct harm. For all the evil of the pornography industry (which is countless) I don't think the harm is direct enough to justify completely banning it, and I don't know that a blanket ban would actually do anything. Reasonable age limit ID laws and somehow tracing the performers to verify their age and "consent" make much more sense.

That's the crazy thing, even the men who aren't actively involved in this will rabidly support the current social order. Even the men who think it's shameful or pathetic to visit prostitutes (not because of any ethics but because real men get chicks via the power of their alpha energy) will have no fucks to give because these are trivial "women's issues", whereas something like ending prostitution is a personal attack on them, because even loser men's dicks are more relatable and important to them than women's lives. And ofc many will think these women deserve it for being "bad women".

It's why the whole #NotAllMen thing is such bullshit - it's not about one single rapist/domestic abuser, it's about all the men enabling, excusing and covering that behaviour up, even the men who don't do it themselves. In fact those men will often try to profit off that fact by calling themselves NiceGuys while doing nothing to hold their bros accountable or changing things for the better. Men love that the bar for them is in hell.

I refuse to debate two obvious facts: 1. the patriarchy exists 2. and that's a bad thing

GoneWildAudio actually has a policy where each poster needs to make an audio verifying that this is them posting their videos. And if you have more than one person involved, all of them need to have accounts verified in the same way. The very least porn could do it make it obligatory to film a short confirmation at the start of each video that this specific video was filmed and posted with full knowledge of the participants. Obviously this doesn't solve the issue of coercion, rape in "professional" porn, the inability to have it taken down once it's out and all the inherent dangers of porn on women, but it's better than what's currently done, which is nothing.

The seminal (unfortunate pun) film Deep Throat illustrates how porn cannot be banned. This film inspired the nickname for an insider source to watergate that got Nixon to resign. By age 10, I knew that deep throat had to do with some movie. Shortly after my 18th birthday, I went to go see it myself as it was then the focus of the meese commission, which ultimately failed. And at this point 53 years later, you cannot argue its cultural, political and historical significance to ban it.

The focus should be on minors just as it is with tobacco and alcohol. You run an adult channel, it’s on you to digitally card every viewer. It is on you to maintain a legal custodian record proving the age of every performer.

How direct does it have to be then? Most of the women in porn are harassed, assaulted and abused. Porn has also clearly contributed directly to violence during sex for so many women who arent involved in porn at all. Take, for example, how common it is for men to just strangle women they're hooking up with as if thats completely normal. I dont necessarily think an outright ban would work either but its definitely directly harmful.

This isn't related to direct harm necessarily but I personally struggle to see how society will ever move past misogyny if the overwhelming vast majority of men watch women get sexually degraded on the daily. There's literally no way someone can consume content like that regularly and simultaneously view their female counterparts as whole people. Porn directly contributes to our dehumanization.
