These upcoming administration appointments scare me, and I don't know why they don't scare more women. Not because I want women to be scared, but because I want them to take these things seriously and understand how acts of misogyny and oppression build on each other over time. The U.S. isn't going to turn into Afghanistan or Gilead overnight, but the more that openly anti-women people are allowed into the highest levels of office, the more opportunity there is to set the U.S. on that path.

Right?! It just baffles me. But apparently "at least Trump knows what a woman is" is all they need to justify a regression back to a more misogynistic United States. "Make America Great Again"... for who, exactly? Rich white men.

Audre Lorde's "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house" seems ever pertinent...

It's depressing how many women think "knows what a woman is" is somehow enough. Not when that knowledge is only used for misogynistic purposes.

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, this kind of thing is why I find Ovarit borderline unreadable these days. Not sure if this was shared over there but I'm sure the comments would be all about how:

  • at least they know what a woman is!
  • akshually gender identity stuff is worse, for (insert bullshit reasons here)
  • well if Democrats had WANTED my vote they would have asked really nice, AND given me a pony. but they didn't
  • if the Democrats had just magically encoded Roe in the Constitution none of this would have happened, ergo, it's all the Democrats' fault
Sorry, didn't mean to derail and act out the thing we're all trying to avoid over here... XD;;

Though now that I've gotten started, I do sort of want to derail because on a recent Ovarit post by /u/Elizabelch, there are multiple users being upvoted stumping for a Federalist post that argues that women shouldn't go to school so that they can have more babies. LOL. (In addition to reciting several of my bullet points above, of course.)

Jailing women for abortions and preventing them from going to school... Hmm... Wonder if these things are related? I wonder what the ultimate goal of such acts could be? Really wish I could sit some of these users down and ask them face to face.

I don't think I posted the article in my OP over there because of exactly those kinds of reactions.

That was my post and some of the comments were disheartening, to say the least. I don't expect people to have exactly the same opinions I do and I try to make space for different thoughts and approaches. But some just baffle me. A lot.

Oh, that's you! :D Well, I'm very glad to see you around here! You do great work.

One of the many things that drives me batty about over there is, the minute you bring up what one might think are reasonable objections to their views—such as "but maybe you are wrong and women SHOULD be allowed to go to school" or "maybe having nothing but anti-abortionists in government IS a bad thing"—all the bullshit starts flying. "I'm actually a moderate! I'm trying to inject a little sanity into the discussion! You just can't handle differences in opinion! You're trying to censor me!" Etc.

It's very obvious that the ultimate goals of all this are:

  1. to shift the Overton window so that hardline conservative policies are increasingly considered "moderate," and
  2. to drive away all the actually sane moderates.
It's nice that we have this space to vent about all that, at least. Thank you, Clover! (Though sorry, I have seriously derailed this thread XD)
