Transcript of the video:

Discussion between Quanell X and Fox News radio host Matt Patrick Patrick: So Quanell, I want to talk to you about this last week. This young, ten year old, very intelligent looking young lady. A Black young lady at a Pearland school who will not stand for the Pledge of Allegiance in her classroom. She doesn't want to stand up because apparently she believes that Black Americans need a lot more to be done in this country. She is not willing to support the Black Americans that have fought and died for this country. You know what I believe Quanell? And I know you supported her publicly. But you know what I think? I think at ten years old, she has no real understanding of what America is. So I wonder if her parents have sat her down, and explained what Americans have given their lives -- white, black, red -- it doesn't make any difference. They stood and they fought and they died for this country, and she doesn't want to do anything to honor them?

Quanell: She comes from a family of military service members. Her father is a retired military service member also who served this nation well with great dignity. She also has additional family members who was in the Armed Forces. Her mother's a very intelligent woman who has had long conversations, as well as her father, about her not standing for the flag. What white people need to understand--

Patrick: Just white people?

Quanell: Yes, please, let me explain. What white people need to understand is that that national anthem was written by Francis Scott Key, a slave owner--

Patrick: Oh, here we go.

Quanell: --who demonized and hated Black slaves and Black people. And that unwritten third, and unheard of, and unspoken third verse... go research the third verse, where he says "there's no refuge in this country for the hireling or the slave, both to be turmoiled to the grave--

Patrick: How's her parents doing? Are they successful?

Quanell: --this is a man that promised turmoil for Black people to the grave. Would you ask Jewish students to say a pledge to a German anthem that disrespects Jewish people?

Patrick: If they're living in Germany? Sure.

Quanell: No, you would not.

Patrick: Well sure.

Quanell: That disrespects Jewish people? No, you would not.

Patrick: You certainly can kneel down, in America, you have the right to do that. But what will happen to her? How her friends will respond? How the school will view her? How Americans will view her? Is very negative. This is not what you want for a ten year old child.

Quanell: And let me say that that young girl and others like that young girl: America looked at the same way at Rosa Parks when she refused to get up and give up her seat to a white man on the bus, but history vindicated her. History vindicated her. America demonized Harriet Tubman for freeing slaves from slavery, but history vindicated her. So I say to that young girl, you stand strong, stand up, and stand for what you believe in. And to all of those who are too coward to do it, don't get that young girls, when others like her support that young girl.

Patrick: What would you like her to say? To the men and women who have fought for this country like I ran into over the weekend. The black men and women who fought for this country, and some who gave their lives.

Quanell: And ask the black men and women who served America in its military, like in the Independence War, we helped America get it, and we were still slaves afterward. Ask those in Vietnam who gave their ??? Vietnam battle field, but then came back and was called "Niggas" in their own country. We have fought in America's wars and we have never been given the justice and due process of everybody else in this nation.

Patrick: Then why don't you move to a different country? Why are you staying here if you don't like it?

Quanell: Man, let me tell you why. Because the country belongs to Indians. You white folks stole it from them. Raped and robbed their people. This not your country. You all came over here and stole it and beat the hell out of them, so this not your country. You all need to go home. You all need to go back where you came from.

Patrick: If you don't like it, why don't you pack up and ago?

Quanell: Let the Indians decide who should pack up and go and I guarantee you: Black folks are staying and you all will be on the first damn boat leaving here. So don't try that, brother, you aren't [???] make America. This is not your country.

Patrick: What you should do is sit down with someone who has fought for this country Quanell, get their opinion too.

Quanell: Tons of Black people have, and what have we gotten from it?

Comments from reddit:

Catsoverall Black dude patiently listened to all his BS then the second he started responding with facts, got shouted at.

Big-Egg-1749 It's a tactic I first saw on CNN a few years back. The conservative or Republican is given respect to make they're point. When it's your turn they'll start shouting so you can't make you're point or to where no one can hear your point. Watch any program that they are a guest of and it's how it plays out 99% of the time.

LordHammercyWeCooked This vicious dogfight format has been going on so long that I'm convinced the general public doesn't know what a real debate even looks like. Like, if people saw a classic debate with one podium, one microphone, each speaker taking turns, a moderator to cut the mic when they go too long, they'd consider that straight-up alien and weird. Even the presidential "debates" we've seen on tv for the past thirty years haven't been traditional debates. It's just hot mics and shouting matches while the moderator cleans his glasses and announces commercial breaks.

chris5701 it always comes down to them saying "If you don't like it leave my country" this shows their agenda clearly. They are happy to advocate change on voting laws, voting count methods, immigration, making tariffs. But the second someone else mentions changes for them they effectively say "get out".

I've seen people in Asmongold's chat and conservative subreddits that are advocating all nonwhites be removed. Charlie Kirk even said "we need to stop the color revolution".

The white racists have taken over the government and have no shame for what they say.

anitabelle They seem to not like the freedom of choice. They seem to not like most people around them. They really don’t like having to defend their racist views. Seems to me that they should be asking themselves why don’t they leave the country?

Sad-Implement-5091 Even if the government paid for it. Blacks have been in the US for a couple hundred years. This is their home. The logic doesn't apply. It's their home.

It's not if you don't like the country, why don't you leave. If you don't like the country then help fix it. Which is what they are doing. Standing up for what they believe in.

That white guy is an idiot

saintmortfan The white dude said literally nothing of value. Total KO

D3s0lat0r Yeah, he’s just flat out wrong. He sounds like a bigot. The men and women in the military fought and are fighting for the freedom of that little girl to be able to do that. I applaud her for having the courage to do that, most likely doing it alone. Keep fighting brave girl, and don’t give these idiots one ounce of your attention. Most people (of any race) are on your side!

Target2030 And the people in the military were often treated differently after their return based on their color. Look at VA housing loans after WW2. Hardly any black people were able to use them. Same with the GI Bill. They fought for the country and came back to separate water fountains and sitting at the back of the bus.

lost_sunrise Lol what of value do they have to say on the subject? What they are being taught is that their ancestors did a little bad, but now its 400 years later. They don't see that bad.

They don't see their brethens chasing after a black man to hang him on a tree in 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025. As long as these individuals don't see it, they feel there is no reason to get upset over it. Not happening to them.

You telling them what you are experiencing. The on-going policies set out to limit you. The predatory loans, the predatory recruiting practices that in-grained in their brothers to look at unique names who try to do something unique and different, as a lesser thing.

They been indoctrinated by the wealthy to not blame their problems on the current policies makers, the factory owners, the land owners, but the ones that found a way to come up outside of all that obstacles.

So if you looking for understanding upon people who are taught to be blind... life is going to end up a box of chocolates.

Educational-Gate-880 They never, it’s the same passionate argument they have as white people to deflect blame or accountability. Never taking into account about this countries land was never theirs it was already populated by others. And even when they made treaties and contracts to share they kept breaking them and killing the locals off the take more land until it was all consumed.

I have a friend that’s from an Oklahoma tribe and own a Casino. The local city and state tax them to help fund but primarily fund the local emergency response agencies, when those from the tribe need help they are usually the last to get it even they they are the ones who mainly fund it. Still lots of racism there.

My wife has native bloodline and was recently asked how she would feel if trump made her go back to her country by a white lady 🤣, wife told that her bloodline is from this country and where she planned on going since her bloodline wasn’t from here. Needless to say she didn’t like that very much and ended the conversation, mind you this was a casual conversation out of nowhere at a kids birthday party but I guess it was eating at the lady to ask her since she is Mexican. Now at school functions she avoids us and I’m glad she does! I don’t feel uncomfortable but I can tell the lady does. 🤣

Ryan_e3p This is why I don't bother debating people who are not capable of reason or arguing in good faith. It's a waste of time. Sure, it's satisfying to see people shut down, but that guy isn't going to lose his job. He isn't going to change his mind. He is going to dig deeper in, through out more unrelated thoughts and feelings, and continue hating on people who don't look like him who want to use the same 1st Amendment rights that give him the freedom to publicly rip on 10 year old girls.

Happy_Pause_9340 He just kept moving that goalpost when his shit got called out.

ChicagoAuPair He’s not being honest and he knows it. He is there to spew talking points for the proudly ignorant white masses. He knows it’s dishonest. He doesn’t care about discussion. This is fascism 101.

There is no such obligation.
To believe otherwise may resemble Stockholm Syndrome.

I also got this anytime I criticized the US during middle and high school. "why don't you just move back to Canada then??? " I'm 12 and still live with my parents??? Yeah dude, let me just grab a knapsack and start walking north.

My favorite was near the end when Quanell explained why "why don't you move" is an absolutely stupid retort to people criticizing racism in the United States, only to then just have the white guy parrot out the same question again, as if somehow that magically makes Quanell's prior refute go away? Genius stuff really. Behold, the master race.

Leaving is a last resort for most people.

Honestly so far it has been a really interesting read. If anyone thought the The Rhetoric Tricks, Traps, and Tactics of White Nationalism article was illuminating, I feel like this book digs deeper into that topic.

I think I'm only like four or five chapters in, but the author basically spent a lot of time scouring the "alt right" internet to see how Trumpism reigned supreme in the 2016 presidential election through the use of social media.

So far, this book has given me more to think about, in terms of online communities, like possibly what bothered me about places like Ovarit/Vexxed, ala their noble "place for all women" message and the right-wing Overton window shift many have felt they noticed there. I'm on my phone and perpetually tired, but I hope someday soon to write up my thoughts on specific excerpts from this book.

I'm also hoping that this book can help illuminate ways to defend against right-wing creep online and how to maintain left-wing communities.

Of course, all these problems are just for the working class, so I guess who cares. Because I guess the fucking billionaire ruling class thinks that they'll be safe in their damn bunkers in Hawaii or some shit?

How are they so fucking stupid? Like... I just really don't know where to begin to elaborate on that. Like how can they be so fucking stupid to not realize how much the working class enables them to live their comfortable lavish life? Do they not realize how much the fancy foods they eat need people to grow the crops, people to harvest the crops, people to deliver the crops, people to prepare the produce. Let's go even further into that. The people who deliver the crops need vehicles to deliver the crops. The vehicles that deliver the crops need parts for the vehicles to operate, and maintenance for those vehicles. The parts for the vehicles need to be made in a factory by people. The parts for those vehicles need materials. The materials need to be mined or gathered or refined. The materials need to be shipped around by more vehicles. Okay now we get into a loop. To get the produce to the island, you probably need a plane or a boat. We get the same issues about needing maintenance and parts for such things. In addition, you need people smart enough to be able to fly a plane or sail a boat. You need to be able to fuel those boats and those planes. Oh, and the vehicles too. Turns out they all need fuel. Anyway, I won't get into that. So let's go back to the produce. Okay, now you need somebody to prepare the produce into a meal. You need running water to clean the produce. You need engineers to maintain the plumbing for the water system to get to your stupid bunker. You need plumbers who are able to fix any plumbing in your stupid bunker. The person who makes your fancy meal will need supplies, like cutting boards and knives and stoves and pots and pans. What happens when those get damaged? Who delivers them the new cutting boards and knives and stoves and pots and pans? Who makes the cutting boards and knives and stoves and pots and pans? Where did the materials come from for the cutting boards and knives and stoves and pots and pans?

What happens when you get injured in your fancy Hawaiian bunker? Do you have a full medical team in your bunker? Who is supplying them with medical equipment? Where are they getting the medical equipment from? Who is creating the bandages, antibiotics, other medical shit that I don't know about because I'm not a medical person, because it turns out there are a lot of very specialized people who do these things, because the world is really fucking complicated. Where is all this coming from? How are you going to keep finding people who are able to be competent medical staff when you let the rest of the world burn in the name of greed?

Don't even get me started on their dumbass ideas on how they're going to employ some militia to keep them safe, going so far as to wanting to put shock collars that explode on their armed guards to keep them from rebelling.

Video interview transcript of Maria Ressa - Fighting Back Against Trump’s Authoritarian Algorithm With Truth | The Daily Show Jon Stewart: Thank you for being available on short notice. Generally, I have a Rolodex of all Nobel Prize winners. [laughter] And I had to get to R. So that's how hard it is. Your Nobel Peace Prize-- is there any chance you would give it to our guy and save us all? [laughter]

Maria Ressa: I knew you were going to ask.

Stewart: How are you doing as you're watching... not really the market working, but the government interceding in putting pressure on various things? How much is this moment resonating with you, with your experiences? For those who don't know, you were imprisoned in the Philippines for writing truth.

Ressa: I have eleven arrest warrants-- or had eleven arrest warrants in a little over a year.

Stewart: Right. But only four were coke. [laughter] Which is-- I want to make sure people who know that. But it's the same type of thing.

Ressa: You know, I got to say, since 2016, I've been saying over and over and over-- and I guess I'm just going to say: I told you so.

Stewart: You've said it to me many times. And I've always said, [mimicking muttering] "we're resilient in our civic institutions."

Ressa: And he really has.

Stewart: I really have said that to her.

Ressa: Yeah. He said, "no, it's not going to happen here."

Stewart: Right.

Ressa: Yeah. Hello.

Stewart: Oops. What was it about how you were watching it-- are you at least surprised by the speed of it and the breadth of it?

Ressa: When we talked in March, I was saying, this is going much faster than-- in the Philippines, when Rodrigo Duterte took office, he-- so the Philippines has a Constitution patterned after the United States, three co-equal branches of government. And he collapsed our institutions within six months.

Stewart: Do you think it's weird it's taken Trump eight? [laughter]

Ressa: Your-- I think he did it in the first 100 days.

Stewart: No, he did. Yeah.

Ressa: Yeah. Because if you think about it, 143 executive orders-- and then if you look at the way that shaped the reality of everybody, right? I think that was why we spoke in March. Because I was like, this is happening if you do not reclaim your rights. If you don't stand up, it's going to be significantly harder to claw them back.

Stewart: Let me ask you about-- you know, you've got three branches of government. Were they compliant? I think in this moment, they're compliant here, right? It hasn't been at their objection. It's been at their inaction.

Ressa: So it's identical to what--

Stewart: Identical.

Ressa: --identical to what happened in the Philippines.

Stewart: Interesting.

Ressa: So I feel like it's both deja vu and PTSD. I mean, you know, you have an executive, very powerful-- which, by the way, our first president, Marcos, declared martial law by executive order. That was in the '70s. Anyway, you have an executive. [holds up hand] The legislature is the one that's supposed to hold him in check in real time. [holds up second hand] And the judiciary maintains the rule of law, right? Well, what happened in the Philippines--

Stewart: I want you to have a third hand to show me this. I want to see how this model actually works. [laughter]

Ressa: Well, so what happened, this collapsed, which was shocking. It was shocking to watch. But the very first line of defense you had were the Republicans. And then when that collapsed, that meant in real time-- I mean, are you going to get USAID workers back? All of those things that happened that were implemented in the first--

Stewart: Right, appropriations and money that was done.

Ressa: All of that has happened. And that now is normal. And you can-- whether it's in the physical world or in the virtual world-- and then the judiciary, what's-- I watch the same thing happen here that happened to us, which is, the individual judges and justices become targeted. And holding up rule of law becomes that much more-- that much harder. But here's your other thing. And this is-- Silicon Valley is American after all, right? How can you have rule of law if you don't have facts?

Stewart: What-- what is that last word? [laughter] We were told-- so here's what's been interesting. [APPLAUSE] We've been told that any attempt to check facts was a curb on free speech, that any policing on public platforms of anything that occurred-- and by the way, some of it was not right. Some of it was unjust. Some of it was censorious. But it didn't mean-- and we were told that the principle here-- they've said it. "We're going to be the most free speech. We're going to be the most open." And they've just redefined what speech means. What free speech means is free speech is speech that supports the president. And that's the new definition.

Ressa: Are you talking about the tech CEOs or the president's men and women?

Stewart: Well, but are they different? I mean, when you have that kind of meshing, right? It was-- he threatened Mark Zuckerberg with jail because of "Zuckerbucks," which were bipartisan. They went out. It wasn't even electioneering. Mark Zuckerberg went, [whispering] "did you just say jail?" [speaking] Which apparently is the only thing that's worse than being in the Metaverse. But-- [laughter] --I'm not sure which is worse, actually. But he flips over. Now we've got tech. I mean, Elon Musk spent over $100 million to get this man elected. But that's not seen as interference.

Ressa: Corruption.

Stewart: They have joined together. And they're consolidating their power.

Ressa: Yes.

Stewart: Is that a similar-- you know, in Philippines, it's a little different. Basically, social media in Philippines was more like-- it was Facebook.

Ressa: No. I mean, primarily Facebook. But I would say for six years-- these are stats. For six years in a row until 2021, Filipinos spent the most time online and on social media globally. And--

Stewart: Out of anybody?

Ressa: Out of anybody globally. And so what the Cambridge Analytica whistleblower said-- you guys remember that 2018, right?

Stewart: I do, indeed.

Ressa: So what he said was that they tested tactics of mass manipulation in our country. And if they worked in our country, they ported it to yours.

Stewart: Wait. This is like the McRib? They took a-- [laughter] they did a test sandwich and ran it in, like, some place in Columbus and were like, "these people love this shit"? [laughter]

Ressa: And we kept telling you this was happening. In 2016, I said this in Silicon Valley. I said, what is happening to us is coming for you-- 2016, right. And nothing was done. And if anything, all those safeguards that were tried-- that they tried to put in place have been ripped off in time for the 2024 elections.

Stewart: But it hadn't to that point-- in my mind, they had weaponized that brain hack for profit. They hadn't yet weaponized that brain hack for political consolidation and power. That's what feels different.

Ressa: No. What-- you-- what happened in the Philippines is just happening to you.

Stewart: Yes. No, I meant in our country it felt like they weaponized the algorithm for profit. Now they're weaponizing it for both profit and political consolidation.

Ressa: They went hand in hand for most of the rest of the world. I mean, you're not exceptional in this sense. There is a dictator's playbook. [laughter] Right?

Stewart: You think we fell for it? [laughter] We're just a run of the mill country that falls for this? It really is a playbook. They studied Hungary. They studied soft autocracy. They studied hard autocracy. They used the same man. When I watch them and they go on and they go, we fired a missile at a Venezuelan drug boat, I think about Duterte and I think about--

Ressa: That's extrajudicial killings in our country. That's what we called it, right?

Stewart: And that's how we consolidated through the fear on a mass--

Ressa: Fear, anger, hate. Fear, anger, hate. So it's like-- we'll say this one more time because I feel like, you know, Sisyphus and Cassandra combined. We kept saying this.

Stewart: Hold on. That is a great idea for a movie. Hold on. [writes on notepad] [laughter]

Ressa: By design, these platforms spread lies. Social media spreads lies, social media spreads lies. By a 2018 MIT study, at least six times faster. So by design, lies spread faster. That's the incentive. And then in 2017, we saw, in our country, in the Philippines, that if you lace it with fear, anger, and hate, it can go viral. That's the incentive structure. So that was used to attack us. Now, imagine if you're pumped full of-- in the Nobel lecture, I called it "toxic sludge." Online violence is real-world violence. So they hacked our biology. Thinking fast, thinking slow-- we're thinking-fast people. Our emotions, they change the way we feel--

Stewart: Reptilian.

Ressa: --to change the way we look at the world, to change the way we act, to change the way we vote. And as of March this year, V-Dem in Sweden said that 72% of the world is now under authoritarian rule, that we are electing illiberal leaders democratically [holds up smartphone] because of insidious manipulation. So they go hand in hand, money and power.

Stewart: And now, with the horrific events in Utah, everybody has the Zapruder film of it in their pocket.

Ressa: And it wasn't taken down on social media.

Stewart: No. Horrifying. And it's-- you know what I liken it to, to some extent? Because this type of manipulation, it will always exi-- you know, I liken it to this. It's like a chef. A chef has a couple of tricks. You come into a restaurant. What's a chef going to do? He's going to be like, you know what? I want these people to come back. I'm going to throw in a little extra butter. I'm going to add a little bit of sugar to the marinara. But it's still within the realm of-- but then you look at ultra-processed food. And you realize, that's different. That's guys in lab coats trying to figure out how to bypass whatever biological signals you give that cause you to stop eating, to bypass that to make you sick. And it's so interesting because you watch MAHA talk about, we have to get rid of ultra-processed foods. It's killing us. It's making us fat. And then Big Pharma comes in, and they give us GLPs. And it's a big cycle. But nobody talks about ultra-processed speech. And that's the difference. The algorithm is ultra-processed. It's not about adding a little bit of humor or a little bit of fear or a little bit of outrage. It's about designing a machine.

Ressa: Yes, absolutely.

Stewart: Me and Maria won the Nobel Prize. I won it too! [cheering] Oh my god. I can't-- I can't believe we're both Nobel Prize winners. Maria, I want to talk about-- right now, in this country, so many people are living on eggshells on the whims of one man. Whether you're a researcher in a university, or a day laborer outside of a Home Depot, or someone who shitposts on Twitter, or any-- there are so many people in so many spheres-- or whether you're a small business that doesn't understand the diabolical whims of tariffs and how they're being laid out just willy-nilly. What do you do with that? I know that must have been what it's like in the Philippines. An authoritarian regime, civic institutions and the way that they function, they can be abysmal, but they provide a certain stability. I've never seen this country, where so many are living on eggshells.

Ressa: And part of that is precisely because there hasn't been enough-- I mean, we were talking about this. There hasn't been-- it feels like Americans are like deer in headlights, you know?

Stewart: Yeah! I feel that way.

Ressa: But if you don't move and protect the rights you have, you lose them. And it's so much harder to reclaim them. It will have--

Stewart: But they keep saying-- our leaders, the ones that we elected to keep an eye on this, keep going on TV and going, you've got to speak up. And you're like, uh, here? Like, right now? Out the window? Like, for what? Like, there is no real sense of process or scaffolding that could create a ladder out of this hole.

Ressa: But this is--

Stewart: You're about to choke me, aren't you? [laughter]

Ressa: No, no, no! No, no! You know-- so let me just say what this moment is. I've been struggling. And I just came from Australia. And--

Stewart: You're a very optimistic person. I know that.

Ressa: So this--

Stewart: For everything you've been through--

Ressa: There were two ways I was going to describe this moment. And it does start with the [holds up smartphone] manipulation and the corruption of our public information ecosystem, right? So I was saying, is this an information apocalypse, or is it an information Armageddon?

Stewart: Okay. Um, those are our-- so-- you are a very optimistic person. [laughter]

Ressa: And that--

Stewart: And our choice is... apocalypse or Armageddon. [laughter]

Ressa: But that's why-- because I'm optimistic, I chose Armageddon.

Stewart: Got-- yep. [laughter]

Ressa: - Right?

Stewart: Yep.

Ressa: Because-- no, think about it. Think about it. Part of it is-- apocalypse is done. It's the end of the world.

Stewart: Apocalypse is the end.

Ressa: But Armageddon is the battle. This is the battle. Right. [applause]

Stewart: Peaceful, peaceful. [applause]

Ressa: Peaceful! [applause]

Stewart: And by the way-- so without this going in that direction then, I want to talk about-- this was-- when was Duterte-- when did he take power?

Ressa: 2016.

Stewart: He's gone.

Ressa: Ohhhh, yeah! [laughter and applause]

Stewart: Okay. So-- so this isn't-- it didn't last forever. And your work, your lone voice crying out from the apartment that they forced you to be in and the imprisonment that they were looking for, it-- it's over. He's not there anymore.

Ressa: So it wasn't-- I wasn't jailed for very long. I'm very lucky in this, right? But let me put it this way. Our lawyers told us I was crazy. And I had a company. And by the way, nothing puts a news organization, coheres, makes it feel so good to be a journalist, than a news organization that is mission driven. When we came under attack, Rappler came together in ways we could never have done.

Stewart: Preach that to the heavens. That is so true and so missing.

Ressa: So what we saw was that if you stand up, if you just keep going-- because our lawyers told us I was crazy, right? Do you negotiate with President Duterte, or not? How can you negotiate when you can't give him what he wants? So we didn't--

Stewart: Which is fealty.

Ressa: --i.e., you can't do your job.

Stewart: Right.

Ressa: And then here's what happened. We just kept doing our jobs. We just kept putting one foot in front of the other, a year where I had eleven arrest warrants and then was convicted. And I still have-- I have to ask for permission to travel from the Philippine Supreme Court until today. But in March this year, Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on alleged crimes against humanity. And he is now in jail in the Hague, waiting for his trial.

Stewart: Wow. [applause] Wow. And listen. And that doesn't mean it's over. And I understand that in the Philippines, his daughter-- and, certainly, the Philippines has a long tradition of family dynasties. And that still exists there. And there's still, I'm sure, choppy waters ahead for Maria Ressa.

Ressa: Well, let's say we move from hell to purgatory, right? [laughter] It's not bad. It's not bad. You got to take--

Stewart: The next book has got to be "From Apocalypse to Armageddon: A Story of Optimism," Maria Ressa. [laughter] Maria, I can't tell you enough what a salve for the soul you always are whenever I get a chance to talk to you, whenever I get to see you. Thank you so much for coming by in this unbelievably strange deer-in-headlight time. And I so appreciate you coming on.

Ressa: No, thanks for having me. It's such a pleasure. [applause]

[applause]

Roger Freeman We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat.

Roger Freeman expressed his concerns about an educated proletariat at a 1970 press conference. Articles have been written combining this mentality, Nixon's presidency, and the student debt crisis:

“We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat.”

How the Threat of an ‘Educated Proletariat’ Created the Student Debt Crisis

The Origin Of Student Debt: Reagan Adviser Feared "Educated Proletariat"

While it seems like the focus is on higher education in terms of this fear of creating the educated proletariat, I feel that the Bush era policy of No Child Left Behind also played an important role in decimating the likelihood of the educated proletariat. When public schools begin frantically obsessing over reading and math scores determined by a bubble sheet test as their means of getting funding, quality of education plummeted. This is in addition to public schools receiving funding based on graduation rates, causing school districts to refuse to fail students who do inadequate work, leading to cases of teachers reporting on high schoolers who are unable to do much more than write their own name on a piece of paper. Teachers must now waste their time dealing with problematic students who are not proficient enough for their grade level, in addition to dealing with school administrators breathing down their necks about ensuring test scores are good for receiving additional funding.

I think for those new to politics, or kind of in the surface level of the left versus right dichotomy, it is somewhat difficult to wrap one's head around the difference between the left/leftists and [neo]liberals. It doesn't help when right-wingers intentionally conflate the terms. It especially doesn't help when even the terms liberalism and neoliberalism are actually different concepts, and when most people talk about liberals they mean neoliberals (thanks to tuff_terfies on Ovarit for educating me on that, especially in the context of liberal feminism and neoliberal feminism).

So I'm making this post to collect various resources that try to help explain the difference between left wing and [neo]liberalism. (Others who are more politically aware than me feel free to add to this thread, ofc.)

Starting with this Reddit comment that encouraged me to make this thread:

jasoncross00 DNC: "We need to win more elections! How can we get people motivated?!"

sees Mamdani

DNC: "Oh we have got to put a stop to THAT!"

Make it make sense to me, people. Every time we get a principled, smart, and charismatic Democrat who actually fights for real working-class issues against the oligarchy and corporate overlords, they win and they win BIG. Whether it's AOC, Crockett, Omar, or (soon) Mamdani.

And in every case, they get almost no establishment support. Or worse, are actively opposed by the Dem party elite.

Like holy shit, do you want to win elections or not?

Cool-File-6778 They want to win. Not you. The Clintonite neo-liberals.

They are absolutely willing to let you suffer under a Trump presidency believing it will drive you back into voting for them. They will not abide a populist left wing movement.

I could go into depth on this but in the 80s left wing politics fell in the west, the democrats had actually left wing people and they got rocked by Reagan and it made them take a new path, left socially right fiscally. It unfortunately worked, Clinton won in America, Blair used the same tactic to win in the UK and neo-liberalism was born and has dominated the democrats ever since.

They believe that the only way to win is to appeal to voters who are not bigoted but at the polling stations will vote for whomever they believe are safe hands for the economy and for 60 years the media, politicians and corporations(as well as military/police) have all repeated the same mantra.

*insert long paragraphs about reduce taxes on rich, increase military spending, cut regulations, cut spending, the kind of things you expect from right wing economic policy thinktanks which has been propagandized throughout the media for 60 years

They rely on "swing" voters getting sick of republicans and being willing to vote for democrats. Those swing voters are conservative when it comes to fiscal policy but go back on forth on whether they actually want to vote for republicans.

That is how they see things, and is why they are willing to go nuclear on really left wing movements in their party. They feel like they can only gain power by being a less bigoted republican party because they see the american public as low information conservatives.

That is how they won power with Clinton, Obama and Biden that is how they will continue to pursue power. The problem they have is that they want to appeal to younger left wing voters but don't actually want to offer them anything, they just want to repackage and rebrand themselves to be able to continue as they have been, without offering anything, while gaining that support, for as little as possible.

Real left wing politicians are a threat because they actually offer what people want which make repackaging neo-liberalism impossible. They will fight it until its dead and then refocus their attention on winning power.

Vote blue no matter who is a phrase that means "get in line and vote for a neo-liberal because we will happily let the republicans ruin your lives if you don't".
